Champion Enterprises Inc., a maker of mobile homes, hired Albert A. Koch, the former chief financial officer of the discount retailer Kmart, to run the company after its first-quarter loss doubled. Mr. Koch will take over as chairman from Walter R. Young and become president and chief executive until Champion Enterprises finds a permanent replacement, the company said. Its shares increased 26 percent yesterday. First-quarter revenue fell 64 percent from a peak in mid-1999 as lenders curtailed credit amid mounting bad loans, prompting Mr. Young in April to predict a full-year loss.
