ENCYSIVE REPORTS RESULTS FOR A PULMONARY DRUG

Encysive Pharmaceuticals Inc., a biotechnology company based in Houston, said yesterday that a study showed its Thelin drug improved exercise tolerance in people with a condition that damages the lungs and heart. People taking Thelin for pulmonary arterial hypertension added about 26.5 yards to the distance they could walk in six minutes during the 18-week test, while those on a placebo worsened, the company said. Encysive said it intended to file in April for Food and Drug Administration clearance to sell Thelin, which would be a competitor to Tracleer from Actelion Ltd., which was included in the study. Thelin showed a lower rate of side effects than Tracleer, Encysive said. Stock in Encysive rose $1.29, to $11.80 a share.

F.D.A. WILL APPROVE DRUG FROM DISCOVERY LABORATORIES

Discovery Laboratories Inc. said yesterday that the Food and Drug Administration said it would approve the company's Surfaxin respiratory drug for premature infants. The F.D.A. will approve Surfaxin after Discovery completes labeling and corrects issues with manufacturing practices, the company said. The company's manufacturer, Laureate Pharma Inc., is bringing the sterility of its production environment to levels required by the F.D.A., and is changing some paperwork, Discovery's chief executive, Robert J. Capetola, said. Surfaxin mimics a human lung protein that helps the lung absorb oxygen, he said.
