Adaptec said it expected to take a $20 million charge related to the transaction in its first quarter, which will end on Tuesday. Adaptec announced another unrelated first-quarter charge in March. Adaptec said the F.T.C. would probably oppose the purchase because the combination might have given Adaptec a monopoly in one of several technologies to move information to and from computers. Adaptec's shares rose $1.0625 yesterday, to $16.6875.
