CNN Officials to Propose a Business News Cable Service

Executives of CNN today will ask the board of its parent company, Turner Broadcasting System, to approve a new cable service offering business news on weekdays. The business coverage, from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M., would be supplemented at night and on weekends by the CNN International channel, which is devoted to foreign news. The service would begin in January.

SMITHKLINE IN DRUG VENTURE WITH SARNOFF RESEARCH

The British pharmaceutical giant SmithKline Beecham P.L.C. and the David Sarnoff Research Center Inc. said yesterday that they would collaborate to develop a device for the rapid screening of molecules for drug discovery. To develop and commercialize the device, Sarnoff will form a company in which it will have a majority stake. SmithKline, which has its United States headquarters in Philadelphia, will hold a stake in the new company and have access to any devices developed. The American depository receipts of SmithKline rose $1.625, to $44, on the New York Stock Exchange.

ENSERCH COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF PACIFIC GAS UNIT

The Enserch Corporation said yesterday that it had completed the acquisition of the Dalen Corporation in Dallas, a unit of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, for $340 million in cash and the assumption or refinancing of $115 million of Dalen's bank debt. Enserch, a natural gas and oil exploration company based in Dallas, said yesterday that it had paid for the transaction with lines of credit and a bridge loan. The deal was announced in April.

AST RESEARCH RESTATES RESULTS FOR FISCAL YEAR

AST Research Inc. said yesterday that it had restated its results for the fourth quarter and the 1994 fiscal year to reflect a $33.6 million charge for its purchase of the personal computer manufacturing operations of the Tandy Corporation. AST, a personal computer maker based in Irvine, Calif., said it lost $8.1 million in the quarter that ended on July 2, 1994, instead of earning $14.1 million as previously stated. For the fiscal year, AST had revised net income of $31.3 million, down from $53.5 million. The charge reflects a readjustment in the value of some of the assets acquired from Tandy.

ARCSYS SHARES SOAR ON FIRST DAY OF TRADING

Shares of Arcsys Inc. rose sharply yesterday on the software maker's first day as a publicly traded company. Shares of Arcsys, which closed at $26.50 in Nasdaq trading, were priced at $13 by Morgan Stanley Group, the lead manager of the offering. Arcsys issued 2.4 million shares, and yesterday's trading volume was 3.4 million shares. Arcsys, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., develops and markets software used to design integrated circuits. A shortage of initial public offerings, combined with strong gains among high-technology issues, have made new companies like Arcsys attractive to investors.

VLSI TECHNOLOGY TO TAKE CHARGE FOR PATENT RULING

VLSI Technology Inc. said yesterday that it would take a pretax charge of $19.4 million in the second quarter to account for a recent judgment against the company for infringing a packaging patent of Texas Instruments Inc. A jury found that VLSI, an integrated circuit maker based in San Jose, Calif., was one of three companies that deliberately infringed patents by making semiconductor devices with a plastic packaging process developed by Texas Instruments. VLSI had been expected to earn 33 cents a share in the quarter that ends June 30. The company also filed a plan with the Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday to sell 2.5 million common shares. Shares of VLSI fell 68.75 cents, to $25.3125, in Nasdaq trading.

ECHO BAY VENTURE TO ACQUIRE COPPER AND GOLD PROJECT

Echo Bay Mines Ltd. and its Canadian joint venture partner, TVI Pacific Inc., agreed in principle yesterday to acquire the Kingking copper and gold project in the Philippines from the Benguet Corporation for as much as $67 million. The agreement calls for Echo Bay, based in Denver, to own 75 percent of the mine, which is on the southern island of Mindanao. TVI Pacific, based in Calgary, Alberta, will hold the remaining 25 percent. Echo Bay said it expected to pay at least $50.3 million for its share. The mine contains 5.3 million troy ounces of gold and 3.1 billion pounds of copper, of which 3.8 million ounces of gold and 2.2 billion pounds of copper are expected to be recoverable, Echo Bay said.

BIG O TIRES APPROVES SWEETENED BUYOUT OFFER

Big O Tires Inc. said yesterday that its directors had approved in principle a sweetened $54.6 million buyout offer from a management group headed by Steven P. Cloward, the president of the company. The offer of $16.50 a share is subject to final approval by the board and stockholders. Shares of Big O Tires rose $1, to $15, in Nasdaq trading. In April the board rejected a buyout offer of $16 a share from the management group, which also includes Big O Tire Dealers of America, a group of franchise holders. Big O Tires, based in Englewood, Colo., franchises retail tire and auto service stations and distributes its private brand of tires and other brands.
