헨리 몰래슨 생일, 생년월일
헨리 구스타프 몰래슨(영어: Henry Gustav Molaison, 1926년 2월 26일 ~ 2008년 12월 2일)은 뇌전증 치료를 위해 해마 절제술을 받은후, 기억의 메커니즘 연구에 피실험자로 참여하여 많은 기여를 한 인물이다. 의료인이나 연구자가 아니라 환자이자 연구대상인 피실험자로서 관련 학계에 널리 알려져 있는 유명인에 속한다. 사망전에는 개인정보 보호를 위해 H.M.이라는 약자로 불리었으며, 사후에 본명이 공개되었다.
어린시절에 발생한 사고에서 비롯된 발작현상으로 인해 일상생활이 힘들정도로 어려움을 겪던 중, 27세가 되던 해인 1953년 수술을 받았으며, 수술후 뇌전증은 호전되었으나 새로운 정보를 장기 기억으로 전환하지 못하는 심각한 전향성 기억상실증이 나타났다. 당시 의학계는 해마가 기억형성에 핵심적인 역할을 한다는 사실을 알지 못한 상태였으며, 이로인해 수술 후 헨리는 정상적인 생활에 큰 어려움을 겪었다.
그럼에도 불구하고 헨리는 기억장애 연구에 피실험자로 적극 참여하였으며, 그 덕분에 뇌과학 중 기억 관련 분야 연구에 큰 기여를 했다. 1957년 그를 대상으로 한 첫 연구 결과가 학술지에 발표되면서 해마 연구에 관심을 촉발시켰으며, 관련분야 연구가 비약적으로 발전하게 되었다.
해마와 내측 측두엽의 일부를 잘라내는 절제술을 집도한 의사는 윌리엄 스코빌이며, 수술 직후 헨리에 대한 연구는 주로 캐나다 맥길대학에 신경심리학자인 브렌다 밀너 박사와 함께 진행되었다. 헨리는 죽기 전까지 코네티컷주 윈저 락스에 위치한 관리시설에 살면서 연구에 참여하였으며 사후에 뇌 기증 의사를 밝혔다.
기증받은 그의 뇌는 캘리포니아 대학교 샌디에이고 캠퍼스에 보관중에 야코포 아네세(Jacopo Annese) 박사에 의해 2009년 12월에 2401장의 슬라이스 표본으로 만들어졌으며, 이후 UC 데이비스의 MIND 연구소로 옮겨졌다. 헨리의 해마는 슬라이스 표본을 바탕으로 컴퓨터를 이용하여 3차원으로 복원되었고 그 결과는 2014년에 논문으로 발표되었다.
헨리에 대한 연구는 뇌 기능과 기억 사이의 연관성을 설명하는 이론의 발전과 뇌의 구조와 기능이 특정 심리 과정과 어떻게 관련되는지 연구하는 인지신경심리학의 발전에 중요한 역할을 했다.
