WNBC-TV Plans Longer News Shows, From 5 to 7:30 P.M.

WNBC-TV reptdly plans to expand its early evening newscast to 2 hrs a night and is negotiating for new personnel to serve in some of principal on-camera roles; extended local news, coupled with network's Nightly News with J Chancellor as anchorman, will give station news block from 5 to 7:30 PM five evenings a wk; 2-hr local newcasts have been running in Los Angeles but are uncommon in rest of nation; WNBC envisions mid-Mar date for change in format; its local newscast at 6 PM has performed poorly in ratings for several yrs; NYC ratings for network programs are important because met area represents about 10% of natl TV audience; 6 PM newscast underwent its last drastic overhaul in '72 when C Stokes was brought in from Cleveland and P Udell from Los Angeles; 2-hr concept has been developing under NBC execs R Northshield, L Hanna and E Ubell
