법무부의 인권 담당 변호사로도 활동하였고, 코카콜라 등 유명 기업의 고문 변호사 등을 지냈다. 2006년 매사추세츠 주지사 선거에 민주당 소속으로 출마하여 상대 후보를 큰 차이로 제치고 주지사로 당선되었다. 이로써 그는 미국 역사상 아프리카계 미국인으로는 두 번째로 선거로 선출된 주지사가 되었다 (지명된 경우를 포함하면 세 번째).
