Two years ago, when he was Secretary of Education, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon tried to set Mexican history straight by ordering new public-school textbooks that for the first time mentioned student demonstrations in 1968 and seemed to blame the Mexican Army for shooting protesters. Mr. Zedillo's approach proved to be too direct for many Mexicans. He ran afoul of the politically powerful army and other conservative groups, and the history texts were rewritten the next year.

NEWSPAPERS and magazines are dipping their toes into computer services, but not without problems. For the reader, ease of access is one problem; a newspaper or magazine can be skimmed at the breakfast table. For the publisher, protection of copyright is another; everyone has photocopied articles, but that violation is hardly comparable to making them available to millions of people. Recently I explored the news on three services, spending about half an hour on each. I would have gotten far more information in the same time from a printed source. Of course, print is my medium; I did not grow up with computers or MTV.

Women's Coalition Rallies to Defend Mrs. Clinton

A group of Democratic women, tied by politics to the White House but purposefully steering clear of direct Administration influence, has begun a campaign to defend Hillary Rodham Clinton against attacks arising from her participation in the Whitewater land deal. Dozens of women, some of whom have expressed frustration among themselves about Mrs. Clinton's choice not to speak out vigorously on her own behalf, have been meeting for a month here to plot ways to strike back at what they consider unfair press coverage and partisan assault.

COORS COMPLETES PURCHASE OF BREWERY IN SPAIN

The Coors Brewing Company said yesterday that it had completed the purchase of El Aguila brewery in Zaragoza, Spain, for $50 million. The total includes spending on operations and marketing over the next five years. The Zaragoza plant has annual production capacity of 500,000 barrels. Coors said that its Coors Extra Gold would be brewed there for distribution in Spain and that it would continue to brew El Aguila products, Aguila and Aguila Master, for four years.

G.M. PLANS $758 MILLION ACCOUNTING CHARGE

The General Motors Corporation said yesterday that it would take a charge of $758 million, or $1.05 a share, in the first quarter because of the adoption of new accounting standards. Despite the charge, North American operations of the company are still expected to show a profit for 1994, said G. Richard Wagoner Jr., executive vice president and chief financial officer. The noncash charge is related to the adoption of the Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 112, which affects extended disability benefits to United States workers. Under the new standard, the cost of the benefits will be accrued during the employees' tenures at G.M. The news came after shares of G.M. closed down $1.375, at $56, on the New York Stock Exchange.

GENTEX SAYS CHRYSLER WILL USE ITS MIRRORS

The Gentex Corporation of Zeeland, Mich., said yesterday that it had received a commitment from the Chrysler Corporation to use Gentex's interior automatic-dimming mirrors through the 1999 model year. Shares of Gentex rose 75 cents yesterday, to $24.75, in Nasdaq trading.

AMDAHL IN TECHNOLOGY ALLIANCE WITH 3 OTHER COMPANIES

The Amdahl Corporation, making its first foray into parallel processing systems, said today that it had formed an alliance with the Oracle Systems Corporation, the Ncube Corporation and Information Builders Inc. Parallel processing systems string together a series of microprocessors to perform many tasks simultaneously. Products from the alliance will be available later this year. The International Business Machines Corporation is scheduled to unveil its parallel processing servers in early April.

GENERAL MAGIC SAID TO BE PLANNING STOCK OFFERING

General Magic, a closely watched three-year-old company that makes software for hand-held computers, is planning to raise up to $45 million through an initial public offering by mid-May, The San Francisco Chronicle reported yesterday. Officials of the company, based in Mountain View, Calif., declined to comment on the plan, but the newspaper quoted people close to and inside General Magic as saying it planned to sell up to three million shares at $12 to $15 each in an offering underwritten by Goldman, Sachs & Company, Alex. Brown & Sons, and Smith Barney Shearson. Investors in General Magic include the technology giants Apple Computer Inc., Motorola Inc., the Sony Corporation, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Matsushita Electric Industrial Company.

Agency to End Deal With Hydro-Quebec

The New York Power Authority said yesterday that its trustees voted to cancel a 20-year, $5 billion contract to buy electricity from Hydro-Quebec. "We don't need the power, the price is too high and there are unresolved environmental questions in Quebec," said David Freeman, president and chief executive of the authority.
